4th of July Weekend
It takes us a few hours to let go of the city and shake off the stressors of the work week. Slowly, the traffic thins, our shoulders start to sag, and our jaws release as we finally, finally, start our “vacation.”
We eat beef jerky and sing Steve Winwood as the day fades and the sun slowly sinks behind the horizon. And then finally, in the dead of night, we arrive. Up North.
The morning brings with it coffee on the deck and beautiful blue skies.
We hike to the lake before it gets too hot, only to realize halfway there it ALREADY is too hot. No matter. We are in the land of deserted highways and roadside roses. And the heat treats us just fine.
There is rest, and relaxation, and many, many, many rounds of the only game I can beat The Pharmacist at.
Do you see the deer? This little guy came walking out of the woods while we were playing games. I quickly grabbed the camera and tried to snap a photo as he ran into the neighbor’s back woods.
And there is food…oh yes, there is food!

The fire crackles, and, this being the weekend of 4th, we take the opportunity to light off the only fireworks we have—3 fountains that cost 50 cents each at the local gas station. They are more than enough.
Monday, we pack up and head home. A little more sunburned, a little more bug bitten, and a lot more relaxed.
Cat in the car on the way home. For those of you that asked: YES, she does amazingly well in the car. We usually set up a bed for her in the backseat (this photo above), and she alternates between sleeping there or sitting on my lap and looking out the window. No drool, no puke, no nothing. She LOVES the car, actually! We’re really lucky.
Hope you all had a great 4th of July weekend as well!
